Trainee Estimator
Jed first came to Acreo for a week of work experience in February 2024 while he was still at school. By the end of the week, he was offered a role with Acreo - and the rest is history!
“I always thought a QS or Estimator role would be interesting because of my dad’s job in construction. During my work experience, Drew described estimating as being like Lego, how you price and build things piece by piece. That stuck with me.”
It wasn’t just the role that stood out. Jed said everyone was really friendly in the office. He also liked that he was able to get exposure to different departments within Acreo such as procurement and contract admin, as it gave him a good understanding of the full process.
Life as a Trainee Estimator for Jed varies day by day; however, a typical day for Jed includes:
- Logging tenders onto the database and ensuring it’s up to date
- Pricing small concrete jobs
- Obtaining quotes for materials
- Communication with suppliers and clients
- Occasional site visits

Jed completed both his SCQF Level 6 qualifications in July 2025 and is now progressing through a 4-year Graduate Apprenticeship, aiming to become a fully qualified Estimator. He will have completed his first year in May.
When asked what he’s most proud of, he highlights receiving a cup for ‘best completion and highest standard for SVQ 3 Construction Contracting Operations: Estimating’.
“The apprenticeship has given me a much better understanding of construction drawings, breaking down labour, plant, and materials in detail, and knowing what to look for when pricing work.”
His advice for Future Apprentices is simple but effective: Write down absolutely everything! Remind your future self.
Having Jed on board has improved Acero’s workflow by taking ownership of essential tasks, freeing the team to focus on more complex projects. Apprentices are a vital part of addressing the construction skills gap and securing a sustainable talent pipeline.
We fully support apprenticeships because they give young professionals hands-on experience, building practical skills that deliver real value to the industry.
We’re proud to support the next generation of construction professionals.
